The Alice-East, Texas site is a 205 acre, CDC-registered import quarantine, holding and breeding site—caring for up to 8,000 non-human primates (NHPs). The site holds an OLAW assurance, AAALAC accreditation and USDA B-license and R-registration, and houses an onsite microbiology lab, animal hospital and offers PK study services.

The site also provides husbandry, behavioral and veterinary care for client breeding and holding colonies.    

  • The Alice-East veterinary care program is managed by a team of veterinarians, veterinary technicians and behaviorists who provide daily medical care and minor surgery, utilizing state-of-the-art medical equipment, treatment space and an infant nursery.  
  • The Alice-East behavior and enrichment program is managed by 2 behaviorists and a team of behavior and enrichment technicians. This team promotes optimal psychological well-being for all animals under their care by meeting species-specific needs with social housing, environmental enrichment, human interaction, foraging opportunities, and novel enclosure enhancements.   

The nonhuman primates under our care at Inotiv contribute to biomedical research in the search for cures for human and animal diseases.

Prior experience in laboratory animal medicine is not required as species-specific training and veterinary mentorship will be provided. New graduates or private practitioners looking for a career change are strongly encouraged to apply.

In this role, the Veterinarian delivers medical, surgical, and dental care to patients along with small animal general practice case management and soft tissue surgery. The suitable person for this role will be passionate about providing the highest level of care to the pets that they treat. We strictly follow the USDA Animal Welfare Act and other regulatory guidelines for facility and animal care compliance.

Job Purpose:

The Clinical Veterinarian provides veterinary health care for laboratory animals, advice regarding the care and maintenance of laboratory animals, and training for technicians. This responsibility extends to promoting animal well-being at all times and during all phases of the animal's life as well as the compliance monitoring, quality management and safety of the animal models. 

Responsibilities

This job contributes to organizational success by:

  • Developing and maintaining knowledge and expertise in laboratory animal science and other relevant specialist disciplines through unsupervised study, the reading of scientific publications and attendance at scientific meetings and courses.
  • Assuring timely and accurate reporting of animal health, behavior and wellbeing issues to the Attending Veterinarian (AV) and between the Institutional Official (IO) and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
  • Providing veterinary guidance to animal caretakers, managers, scientists and other stakeholders on the implementation of the three Rs.
  • Engendering and supporting a “Culture of Care” while promoting and demonstrating professional standards.
  • Providing veterinary clinical services including herd health, biosecurity practices, acclimation, conditioning, sanitation practices, pest control program, adventitious organism prevention, detection, containment and eradication, as well as surgery, anesthesia and analgesia as needed.
  • Providing veterinary expertise and guidance for customers and other stakeholders regarding animal transportation, procurement, nutrition, necropsy, behavior, drug storage, preventative medicine, and animal health and welfare.
  • Providing expertise and practical guidance with regard to animal health monitoring programs.
  • Providing continuous coverage for the site including after-hours/weekend/holiday emergency veterinary care on a rotating basis.
  • Contributing veterinary scientific expertise as needed for education and training programs for animal care employees, supervisors, managers and other stakeholders.
  • Providing veterinary oversite, expertise and coverage as indicated for the surgical facilities, including developing new surgical models as well as providing guidance on current best practices in surgical procedures and anesthesia as assigned.
  • Providing input regarding maintaining relevant local, state and federal veterinary and animal-related regulatory compliance.
  • Participating in IACUC meetings as required.
  • Providing veterinary support to other sites upon request.
  • Promoting and complying with quality procedures as well as health and safety procedures.
  • Fulfilling any other assigned duties that may be required.

Qualifications:

  • Veterinary degree
  • Maintaining state veterinary licensure, DEA and federal accreditation (category 2) through continuing education credits
  • Sufficient time in school, private practice or laboratory animal medicine to gain competency in veterinary herd health, clinical medicine and surgery skills
  • Fluent in English, spoken and in writing

 Preferred Skills/Abilities:

  • Animal production, surgery, anesthesia or other related further experience or qualification in the veterinary field
  • Previous teaching/tutoring experience
  • Experience carrying out audits or inspections preferred
  • Computer proficiency and ability to learn use of specific data capture systems
  • ACLAM diplomate or other specialty board certification eligible
