Polymer Engineer (3D Printing Thermoplastic)
Company Description
VOXELPLA is one of the leading 3D printing filament companies in the USA. We focus on developing high-performance thermoplastic filaments for 3D printing (PLA, PETG, ASA, ABS, and TPE). Our mission is to empower makers and innovators with filaments they can trust.
Role Description
We’re seeking a full-time-on-site experienced Polymer Engineer to lead R&D and formulation of advanced thermoplastic filaments for FDM/FFF 3D printing. This is a hands-on role focused on developing, researching, compounding, extrusion, and performance testing of materials like PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, and TPU.
You’ll work on formulating new materials, improving existing blends, and helping to scale production.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, test, and optimize polymer formulations for 3D printing filaments (PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, TPU)
- Lead compounding trials using extrusion systems
- Select and evaluate additives (impact modifiers, chain extenders, nucleating agents, etc.)
- Conduct 3D printability and mechanical testing (tensile, impact, dimensional accuracy, etc.)
- Document formulations, process parameters, and performance data
- Provide recommendations for scaling lab-scale formulations to full production
Requirements
- B.S. or M.S. in Polymer Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field
- 2+ years of hands-on experience in polymer formulation or compounding
- Strong knowledge of thermoplastics used in 3D printing (PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, TPU)
- Familiarity with production, filament extrusion, and pelletizing
- Understanding of additive manufacturing and 3D printing performance requirements
- Able to work independently, troubleshoot, and iterate on formulation goals
Nice to Have
- Experience with QC tools such as MFI testers, DSC, TGA, or mechanical testers
- Passion for 3D printing, open-source hardware, or materials innovation
