Instructor/Facilitator (NYLF Pathways to STEM - Atlanta)
Join us as an Instructor/Facilitator for NYLF Pathways to STEM in Atlanta!
NYLF Pathways to STEM is a unique learning experience for bright, forward-thinking elementary school students who will evolve into next generation innovators, engineers, doctors, software developers, and scientists. Students learn by doing during hands-on simulations and workshops with like-minded peers.
Join us as an instructor/facilitator for the beef heart dissection activity, typically held as two 90 minute rotations over the course of one afternoon. The dissection activity will take place in Atlanta on Tuesday, July 22nd (typical timing is 2 PM-5:15 PM).
Typically our facilitators include researchers, engineers, and/or medical academics or professionals. We invite all participants to share their education background, career journey, professional experiences and general advice with the students.
How will the students prepare for the calf heart dissection?
Students review the structure of a heart as it pertains to the Pathways to STEM curriculum. They will label a diagram of a heart, and learn the basics of what each part of the heart does. Following this, you will come in to facilitate the dissection and answer any questions that the scholars may have.
Who will be in attendance?
Students attending NYLF Pathways to STEM come from all across the country and represent a variety of backgrounds. Primarily elementary school-aged rising 3th and 6th graders, the students are selected based on scholastic merit, scientific interest, community involvement, and leadership experiences.
What are the expectations for facilitators?
The facilitator should be prepared to:
1. Answer questions about their personal and professional experiences.
2. Thoroughly explain the anatomy of the calf-heart and narrate the actions that they are taking during the dissection.
3. Offer advice/opinions on how students can prepare for successful future careers.
What is the dress code for this event?
Facilitators should dress comfortably with business casual as the recommended attire.
Payment is $150 stipend per event.
