JC-473716 - Food Safety Research Scientist

The Food and Drug Laboratory Branch (FDLB) provides services and leadership as a public health reference and research laboratory. To ensure the safety of Californians, FDLB provides the necessary analytical support to screen for, identify and quantify chemical and microbiological contaminants in food and drugs. FDLB also provides regulatory services for substances of abuse laboratories. All activities implement and support legislatively mandated programs.

The candidate works under the supervision of the Research Scientist Supervisor I (Microbiological Sciences) [RSS I (MS)], the incumbent serves as a Research Scientist I (Microbiological Sciences) [RS I (MS)] in the Food and Drug Laboratory Branch, Microbiology Section, Microbiology Testing Unit. The incumbent plans and carries out scientific research of limited scientific scope and complexity such as method development and improvement and participates in the planning and conduct of broad or complex analytical investigations relating to microbial contamination of food products (including human food, animal food and food defense products) and environmental samples. This includes, but is not limited to, isolation, identification and characterization of a variety of pathogens, primarily bacterial, but can also include viral, fungal, and parasite pathogens. The incumbent will use standard operation procedures to work on product and environmental samples submitted to the laboratory for analysis. The incumbent is responsible for pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical parts of the investigations, which includes processing of samples for enrichment, carrying out analysis for identification and confirmation of pathogen isolated by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), VITEK2 Compact (Biomerieux Inc.)

Knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, equipment and techniques in analytical chemistry. Well-organized regarding laboratory documents including results, standard operation procedures, maintenance, and material safety data sheet. Positive attitude and professional demeanor.
