Resilience Unit Internship with Broward County Resilient Environment Department (RED)
** Please note: This is not an on-campus job opportunity. This internship opportunity is with the Broward County Resilient Environment Department (RED) located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Funding for this program is provided through FAU's School of Environmental, Coastal and Ocean Sustainability (ECOS).
Internship Summary
The intern will assist Resilience Unit staff with coordinating resilience and sustainability planning and investment initiatives related to flooding, heat, and renewable energy. They will contribute to research, communications and project coordination and gain a better understanding of local government efforts and processes. The intern will work closely with the Assistant Chief Resilience Officer of Broward County.
The intern will provide legal or scientific research and background information for staff briefings and reports. The intern will assist with the administration of advisory boards and committees and provide clerical support as assigned. This position will complement ongoing project management and development efforts in a variety of disciplines that work synergistically under the County’s Chief Resilience Officer.
The intern will perform beach inspections, environmental compliance visits. The Resilience Unit has high technical equipment such as drones and survey equipment that is used to survey flooding, beach renourishment and construction. The intern will get hands on training and skill development to be able to utilize this high technical equipment.
The Resilience Unit leads a wide range of projects and proposals to plan for diverse natural hazards. Daily efforts will require coordination, interpretation, and application of technical information to help inform decision-making relating to the County’s resilience priorities. Longer term activities may include providing support to an advisory board or work on a team to develop a research and analysis approach to an evolving resilience topic such as heat stress and provide clerical support as assigned.
Close administrative direction and supervision is received form a superior; emphasis is placed on training interns for continuing employment with the County. Work is reviewed through observation of performance, frequent conferences, staff meetings and work products.
The Successful Applicant
- Applicants currently pursuing a degree in any of the biological, biochemistry, life sciences, or similar majors preferred.
- Ability to communicate ideas and contribute effectively.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and quantitative skills will benefit the candidate in this position.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Shall have the ability and demonstrate lifting and carrying 40 lbs.
- Will demonstrate good voice projection and an engaging demeanor, being comfortable with public speaking &/or willingness to learn.
- Will be comfortable working outside, tolerating weather extremes such as the heat and humidity found in South Florida.
- Will have strong attention to detail in following protocols.
